Bode Hooks Tip on Gate as Austrian Wins Kitz Slalom
Kitzbuehel, Austria (Sunday, January 23, 2005) - Austrian Manfred Pranger won the World Cup slalom ski race here today, his career first, while World Cup leader Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) hooked a tip in the first run and did not make the top-30 cut from a second run. American Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) had the fastest second run Sunday and moved up to 12th place in a World Cup slalom with Tom Rothrock (Cashmere, WA) 18th. Pranger led the first run and finished in 1:31.51 with teammate Mario Matt second (1:31.63). Ligety, who tied Benjamin Raich of Austria for the fastest second time, had a two-run time of 1:32.80 while Rothrock finished in 1:33.14. With temperatures in the mid-20s, it was the first day of racing on the 65th Hahnenkamm Weekend after snow and rain forced cancellation of Friday's super G and a downhill Saturday. Miller survived the hooked tip but his time put him in 35th place. Chip Knight (Stowe, VT) was 31st in the first frun, missing the cut by .02. "After 5 o'clock [Saturday], I thought this would be the worst conditions for slalom, but it dropped down to about 11 below during the night," U.S. Head Coach Phil McNichol said, "and it set up beautifully, and Kitz did a great job preparing things. "It certainly wasn't our best day in slalom," he said, "but that's slalom...and we did have a couple of shining moments, especially Ted's second run, which was pretty cool. He was blazing. And Tom's first run was good, but he never found the rhythm of the second run and dropped back." Raich, his nearest challenger, shaved 32 points off Miller's lead by finishing eighth; with a super G Monday in Kitzbuehel and a slalom Tuesday night in Schladming before the World Championships begin Saturday in Bormio, Italy, Miller has 1,048 points to 882 for Raich. Canadian Thomas Grandi finished fifth on the steep and inconsistent Ganslern course for his best slalom result since a second place on this same hill last year. "It's a a great race. I'm glad I charged both runs and I have no regrets," Grandi said. "Fifth place is a very respectable result. I was shooting for the win but it was a great day. I skied well and I know I can do better. "I'm excited for this slalom and I'm going to try to make it for the worlds."
